Promoting Conservation through Community Development

The Victoria Falls Hotel Eco-Initiative

Enabling Matabeleland’s Communities

Eco-initiative workshops are being run at the Victoria Falls Hotel, engaging Matabeleland’s rural communities.

Covering home-grown food production using conservation farming practices, the workshop entry phase programme commenced in March 2012. The Hotel aims to provide a model for household food security units.

Challenges such as human/wildlife conflict, poor soil and arid conditions are addressed in small workshops that show participants how best to set up their own eco-compost units, vegetable gardens and dryland plots. The emphasis is on intensive, well managed, high yielding gardens rather than extensive hard to manage fields, and the potential to expand these activities to earn extra income.

Workshops are being conducted through the Hotel’s Conservation Gardening Centre. The goal is to spread the Eco-initiative activities throughout the area, and help address rural poverty and habitat degradation.
